Chapter 5-2: Education / Sustainable Society Prout Village Second edition

○Composure

When you reach high-quality long-term memory, your body can move without thinking, giving you a sense of composure. This composure allows your mind to be calm, making it easier to notice intuition and generate ideas. Let's consider this in the context of soccer, for example.

When a beginner stops a rolling ball with their foot, their mind is fully focused on stopping the ball. As they become an intermediate player, they check the surrounding situation before stopping the ball accurately. Advanced players simultaneously confirm the surroundings, stop the ball, and take the first step towards dribbling to the opponent's goal. Furthermore, even more advanced players check the surroundings and manage to dribble past one opponent with their first step after stopping the ball.

This is just one example, but as the basic technique of stopping the ball improves, more composure is gained, and numerous ideas stemming from a single technique are born. Speed and accuracy also increase. All advanced players have a high level of foundational skills, while beginners have a low level. There are differences in the basic levels even among advanced players, which result in differences in the combined application techniques, speed, decision-making, and composure, ultimately leading to different overall levels.

○Curiosity

One thing to consider along with the repetition of basics is to start from what you like or need right now. If you like sports, start by playing a game; if you play an instrument, start with a simple song you like; if you want to learn to cook, start with something you want to eat right now that's easy to prepare; if you want to design, start by creating a simple design you like; and if it's a foreign language, don't start by memorizing the dictionary from A to Z, but start with commonly used phrases in everyday conversation.

By starting with what you currently need or will find immediately useful, you can first gain a sense of satisfaction, and the small successes will lead to sustained motivation. Prioritizing your curiosity when deciding what order to tackle things in will lead to the most natural and optimal progress. In many cases, after persisting for about three years, one can establish their own uniqueness, but an approach that starts from the first page of the textbook without prioritizing curiosity often significantly reduces the element of engaging in activities while enjoying them, and thus often leads to boredom and abandonment. This can be seen in the education methods used in a monetary society's schools, which have nothing to do with the individual's curiosity. On the other hand, when it comes to play, everyone starts with what they want to do first, so it's always fun, and therefore, they can continue to do it, and before they know it, they've grown.

○Summarizing Alone

With the techniques gained through repetition, intuition is embodied, and something is completed. What is completed has quality. To create something of high quality, the basic principle is to summarize it alone. By selecting a few items from a multitude of materials and compiling them by oneself, a waste-free entity, unified by a single personality from corner to corner, is created. A director who organizes a team must be alone, otherwise the overall direction will not be determined, and if the members of a band merely create a song together, their individualities clash, so a representative finishes the song. If one artist draws the eyes on the same piece of drawing paper and another artist draws the mouth, an uncoordinated character picture is created.

Even when two people work on something, the basic relationship is that one person summarizes it and the other provides their abilities without hesitation, offering ideas to increase the other's options. This relationship does not change even if the number of people increases. In other words, if the ability, experience, and humanity of the person who summarizes are high, everything will go smoothly. The problems often occur when the ability and humanity of the person who summarizes are insufficient, when the direction is not determined, and when the people around interfere too much.

○Refraining from Interference

The creation of a harmonious entity is fundamentally accomplished by a single individual, which essentially means taking responsibility for making decisions and engaging in activities. Conversely, it is also fundamental not to interfere with others. Those on the receiving end of interference are hindered from taking responsibility for their own actions. If you ever find yourself hesitating to give advice to someone, it's often better not to give it, as the act of hesitation is not intuitive.

○Starting from the Core Elements

When creating something, it is often done with a purpose in mind. In such cases, starting from the core elements makes it relatively easier to create a harmonious entity without waste. The core elements are the selling points or characteristics of the product, the elements that have particularly significant influence among all those that compose the product.

For instance, for a search site on the web, the quality of search results itself is the selling point, so the search function becomes the core element. If you're making a fast car, the engine comes first and the shape second as core elements. If you're creating a comfortable chair, the parts that come into contact with the skin, such as shape and material, become the core elements. In cooking, in most cases, taste comes first, presentation second, and the dish third as the core elements.

Completing the core part to some extent means that most of the product has been completed, so it's just a matter of matching the other elements' features to the core part. Also, the quality of the finished product can be somewhat understood before completion, and the number of days until completion becomes concrete, making it easier to maintain concentration. Moreover, if it's a group effort, it also contributes to maintaining the team's motivation.

For example, when doing a big clean-up, you move large pieces of furniture and then clean every corner. Then, the majority of the work is done, and all that's left is to sweep up the smaller parts. And since you can calculate an approximate finish time, it becomes easier to maintain concentration.

○High Level of Consciousness

Observing the approach of individuals who have found their vocation or ideal job can provide a gauge for the level of consciousness required to create the highest quality results. High consciousness can be described as being always thoughtful, pure, focused, intuitive, having deep and sustained concentration, observational skills, and high execution ability.

People who have found their vocation or ideal job often live by regular rules and discipline themselves. While they may be seen as hardworking by others, they feel the effort leads to better results and personal growth, so they find it rewarding. In other words, their efforts feel natural, self-directed, and positive, leading to a fulfilling life. This behavior is possible because they are engaged in their vocation or ideal job, living for it from morning till night, thinking about it even during breaks, with all plans revolving around it.

Thus, whether what one is currently working on will eventually evolve into the best possible outcome can be discerned by observing one's current approach. If one spends most of the day on something they're interested in, works towards a goal, and feels some progress compared to the previous day, they are likely to become an individual with unique expression in three years. If they have been doing this for three years already, they would have become an expert.

Let's consider the difference in consciousness levels using the example of a workplace. For instance, part-time workers often have a lower commitment level than full-time employees. Part-timers usually work for pocket money, dedicating only a few hours a day to their job, and hence they hardly think about their job outside of work hours. Full-time employees, unlike part-timers, spend most of their day working. However, they often work for living expenses and their working hours are decided by the company, so their commitment is not self-directed and is considered lower than those in their vocation or ideal job. Those in higher positions like supervisors often have a higher commitment level than employees, allowing them to notice minute details that employees miss due to their concentration and observation skills. Company presidents or founders often find their work to be their vocation or ideal job, dedicating their entire lives to it. They think about work even during breaks, after returning home, and on holidays, finding work more enjoyable than rest. While these are just examples, there are naturally part-timers and employees who have found their vocation or ideal job.

In a monetary society, few people encounter their vocation or ideal job, and overall commitment tends to be low. When entities with different consciousness levels work together, it becomes difficult due to differences in concentration, conversation content, and use of time. Such differences in consciousness levels arise depending on whether or not what one is engaged in suits them. If it doesn't suit, anyone's consciousness level will be low; if it's their vocation, their consciousness level naturally rises. These phenomena can be observed in school life. A student who does well in school simply suits the subjects decided by the school. A student who scores poorly in tests is not necessarily unintelligent; the subject may just not suit them. Among students with poor test scores, some may score well in art or physical education, indicating that each student has subjects that suit them. Students without a subject they excel at often develop feelings of inferiority and incompetence throughout their long school life, leading to the habitualization of a passive attitude.

Anyone can elevate their level of consciousness and overflow with initiative when they engage in something that suits them, and they can demonstrate exceptional talent in that field. Humans can only produce high-quality results when they operate with a high level of consciousness. In other words, if you want the outcomes of your activities to be positive, you need to engage in your true calling or suitable job. In many cases, the clues are often hidden in the areas where you are engaged as a hobby.

○Extreme Engagement

There are people in the world who have a deep perspective and can analyze things from viewpoints that are invisible to many. These people are generally competent, and what they have in common is their experience of extreme situations. That's why their perspective deepens. People who engage in matters other than their vocation or suitable job finish their engagement with a moderate amount of passion, a moderate amount of focus, and a moderate amount of time. Therefore, they experience a bit of hardship and a bit of joy. As a result, their experience level is shallow, and they have less experience in deeply observing things. In company terms, they are equivalent to general employees. People with deep perspectives or competence have a past of extremely engaging in something. They dedicate an almost pathological amount of time to one thing, such as reading an enormous amount of books, creating an enormous number of works, practicing for an incredible amount of time, observing for an incredible amount of time, thinking for an incredible amount of time, working incredibly hard, or selling to an enormous number of people. Therefore, they have experienced incredible hardship and also gained a lot. Therefore, they know the extremes of things. In other words, because they know the limit of what can be done in 24 hours a day, they can understand everything from zero to that end. Therefore, they can see the unseen aspects and depths, and they begin to see what level can be achieved if they concentrate and spend this much time. In company terms, this is common among founders.

And when people talk about their experiences, their words carry weight. Therefore, their conversations become attractive, and their remarks gain weight. Therefore, the stories of the competent people who have experienced the extremes are interesting, and the stories of people with average experience levels lack depth.

People who have only done average engagements may feel anxious if their children or close people are engaging in extreme ways, and may caution them or make them stop. Extreme engagement can be harmful to health. However, from the opposite point of view, it can also be a time to climb the necessary steps to become competent.

When you are doing something extreme, you are out of balance. However, if you continue it for a certain period of time, you will get the hang of it. Then, you will be able to maintain the effective parts of that extreme thing while balancing it with the parts where you slack off.

Anyone can do extreme engagement. However, there is a condition, which is only when you are following an interest that you can be passionate about to the end, or when you are engaged in your vocation or suitable job. Once you find it, you will naturally spend an enormous amount of time on it and grow into a competent person.

If you are starting as a beginner, seek quantity over quality, and as your knowledge increases and your competence increases, and you start to see the whole picture, your eye will become discerning, and you will shift from quantity to quality.

○Anticipation, Drive, Etiquette

Leaders of organizations, business managers, athletes, and others who deliver results in a competitive world have common elements. These are high abilities of "anticipation" and "drive." For example, there might be a business manager who anticipates, "This product will become mainstream in the coming era." Following this anticipation, they need the action and drive to materialize that product or gather the necessary human resources. Athletes, too, constantly read ahead. For instance, two boxers in a match will always sway their upper bodies, jab, and strategize, meaning they are anticipating the next move. Then they apply pressure (drive) and aim for a heavy blow to the stomach or chin. Soccer players searching for an opportunity to break through with a dribble are also anticipating before they drive. On the defense, the same principle applies; they anticipate the attacker's next move. Even if a defender is fast, if they lose in anticipation, they get passed. Conversely, even if a defender is slow, if they win in anticipation, they steal the ball. The same principle applies to other sports. Sports coaches also anticipate information about their league's competitors, the contents and effects of practice, and have their athletes execute accordingly. In other words, they anticipate and then drive (execute).

Almost all individuals and organizations that achieve results first win with anticipation and also have the power of execution (drive). Those with quicker mental agility have an advantage in anticipation, leading to composure, intuition, brilliant ideas, victory in competitions, and dominance in games. Conversely, those without composure may experience confusion and anxiety, fail to be intuitive, and struggle to find a breakthrough. To improve the ability to anticipate, gaining successful experiences and knowledge is one way. Another is to impose an unusually high load on the brain through training. Examples of imposing a load on the brain include:

・Reading an enormous number of books in a short period. This improves the brain's processing ability and speeds up thinking.

・Continuously thinking. Being engaged in something you enjoy is the key to long-term continuity.

・In ball games, sending two or more defenders against a player with the ball. This demands the speed of thought and decision-making for more than one person, thereby increasing the speed of anticipation.

・Performing two or more actions simultaneously to improve the brain's processing capacity. For example, running while juggling or doing another task with your feet.

・In soccer, for instance, making a rule of one-touch in a scrimmage makes it a habit to anticipate the next development. There are also games where players wearing more than four colored bibs are divided into two teams, with passing to the same color prohibited or return passes banned. In all these cases, the situation requires a load on the speed of grasping and judging the next situation.

To put a load on the brain, you need to execute more than one element simultaneously. This increases the speed of thought, tolerance, and decision-making in the brain. The higher the brain's anticipation ability, the more it leads to results. Both individuals and organizations have leagues or hierarchies determined by ability, and those with higher anticipation abilities tend to be at a higher level. If the anticipation abilities of two competitors are at the same level, other factors, such as physical abilities, will create a difference.

If both anticipation and drive are high, results will be achieved. However, if these come with etiquette (manners and moderation) as a human being, it becomes the best. Everyone prefers someone who is personable, considerate, able to greet and give thanks, and can cooperate with colleagues for the sake of the team. Individuals lacking in etiquette are disliked, leading to fewer opportunities. Even if they possess skills and abilities, they can achieve results, but they will miss out on many good opportunities. When a person of etiquette is a leader, a circle of good interpersonal relationships is formed within the group, leading to a group that respects each other. On the other hand, when a person who is capable but lacks etiquette becomes a leader, the group tends to be uncomfortable and lacks a spirit of mutual aid.

○Success Experience

When you start to produce results in what you are engaged in, gain skills, achieve numerical evidence of success, and gain recognition, you attract attention, receive praise from those around you, and have your opinions heard. This gives you a sense of purpose and overflowing confidence.

Significant success experiences are also opportunities to learn the process leading to success, which becomes a valuable asset in life and builds confidence. Even when tackling something different later, having previous success experiences makes it easier to achieve results. This is because you have the confidence that you can do it and you can apply the process to success in your new endeavor.

However, even if you have a significant success experience, you won't feel that it's the goal of your life. There are just many elements that make you feel good, but it does not eliminate suffering. Still, from that success experience, there is the knowledge that there is no goal of life there. Then, the next thing to think about is what the purpose of life is. As mentioned earlier, the answer lies in no-mind, which exists between the two extremes of happiness and suffering. There is a calm state, free from attachment and suffering. The human ego always wants to gain something, and before you realize it, acquisition can become the purpose of life.

○Continuity, Boredom, Change

It's often thought that not being able to continue something is a sign of weakness of will, but it's difficult for anyone to continue something in which they have no interest. You can call someone you're interested in every day, but it's hard to do the same with someone you're not interested in. If you can't continue, you should just think that it wasn't suitable for you and move on to the next thing. From curiosity, you discover your vocation, find a suitable job, and then continue, and what comes next is boredom.

If you continue with most things, you will eventually get bored. The period until you get bored varies from person to person; some people get bored in three days, while others never get bored even if they continue for a lifetime. Because people have different purposes and things they want to master, the period will vary. Getting bored after continuing for a long period of time doesn't mean that you've come to dislike that thing, but rather, it's about right to do it occasionally, and it's also a time to graduate. The club activities that you continued every day during your school days also become about right to do occasionally after graduation. Because humans are always changing their interests and desires, if you stay in the same place, the surroundings will change and you will be left behind. Not being able to continue, getting bored, and changing interests are natural phenomena, and it's good to recognize that things always change, and to concentrate on what you are interested in now and work on it. Acknowledging change is ultimately beneficial.
