Chi no Wa

At many shrines, the chinowakuguri is performed. Kaya no Wa is a large ring made of Imperata cylindrica and straw. Both Imperata cylindrica and straw are plants of the Gramineae family, and straw such as rice and hemp was used for shimenawa, which represented two snakes. In other words, the Kaya no Wa is considered to be the Japanese Ouroboros, which is a ring of one snake.
