Cyanobacteria convert sunlight into food and oxygen by photosynthesis. Fossil evidence shows that unicellular bacteria reigned all over the globe during the first two billion years of Earth's birth. Crowds of cyanobacteria called stromatolites and deposits of lime deposits are scattered all over the world.
